Job Title: Director of Development

Location: Pendragon Theatre, Saranac Lake, NY
Position: Full-time, year-round. Working both on-site and remote/virtual.
Salary range: $60,000-$70,000 depending upon experience. Health insurance included. This position is FT preferred though part-time applications can possibly be considered. Please acknowledge this in your cover letter.
Pendragon Theater in Saranac Lake, NY has an exciting opportunity for the right person to become the theater’s first Director of Development.  Pendragon is emerging from two challenging pandemic years with a new Managing Director, a committed Board and a mandate to complete its Capital Campaign to build a much-needed new theater.  Working with the Managing Director, the Board and the Campaign Task Force, the Director of Development will manage Pendragon’s fundraising activities with a focus on completing Pendragon’s $7.5 million Campaign, of which it has secured $4.5M, as well as increasing annual fund gifts, researching and writing grants and running special fundraising events.
The Director of Development will be a natural connector who understands that people can be moved with narratives and data. A team player, the Director of Development will embrace their role as a leader within the organization and throughout the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Capital Campaign 

  • Develop/strengthen campaign donor tracking system

  • Coordinate pledge forms and pledge reminders

  • Organize small, exclusive major donor/potential major donor events

  • Work directly with the Capital Campaign Task Force to accomplish goals

Annual Fund

  • Organize and execute details for a successful annual fundraising campaign

  • Develop solicitation materials and annual appeal letters

  • Ensure proper coordination for donor acknowledgments and prospect/mailing list maintenance

  • Ensure donor information is kept confidential and current

  • Prepare and submit monthly reports on activities and outcomes to Managing Director

  • Plan and manage initiatives and activities to promote community awareness of Pendragon Theater

Advertising Sales and Sponsorships

  • Solicit local businesses for ads and sponsorships for the Pendragon’s theater season.

Grant Writing

  • Research funding opportunities, appropriately managing submission timelines and deliverables

  • Draft grant proposals and supporting documents based on funding requirements

Special Events

  • Manage at least 1 fundraising event annually

  • Develop solicitations for corporate sponsorship

  • Oversee all event details

  • Develop guest list in coordination with Managing Director and Event Committee

  • Organize sending of invitation and recording RSVP’s


  • Write press releases and promotional materials for fundraising outreach and events

  • Participate in community and business networking events in order to facilitate relationships

  • Attend internal meetings as assigned

  • Perform other duties as assigned


Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, plus additional related college courses or professional training.

  • 5+ years’ experience working in a nonprofit organization’s development or fundraising department, or related experience

Required Specialized Skills & Traits

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organization skills

  • Proficient in using donor databases

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, & PowerPoint

  • Ability to work independently, in a team environment, and from home

  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback

  • Ability to present ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Preferred Specialized Experience & Skills

  • Social media savvy

  • Understanding of how to adapt operations into a virtual, Zoom-based environment

  • Familiarity or proficiency with graphic design

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
This position requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to have transportation to attend meetings outside the office as well as work remotely. Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The need to respond to competing needs or meet deadlines could cause stress at times. Equipment used includes computers and various office machines. Summer flexibility is desired for attending events at various times.
